Geographical description:
The study site is located in the northern part of The Netherlands, enclosed by the Waddensea in the north (Figure 1). It covers an area of flatland of approx. 8700 km2. The region has a moderate sea climate (Cfb - Köppen climate classification) with a mean annual temperature of 8.5°C and mean annual precipitation of 796 mm. Latitude: 53.21721° N Longitude: 6.57353° E
Main farming systems:
The area has an important agricultural activity as more than 50% of the acreage in Groningen is arable farming and The main crops are potato and cereal crops. Also dairy farming plays an important role both provinces, about 20% of the dutch dairy farms is located in the north .
Ongoing research and innovation actions
The Groningen province government is financially encouraging farmers to adopt more environment friendly farming practices. At Kollumerwaard, the farmers meet once per month and discuss the issues related to present and future of their production and farms.
