Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR, 300 staff, until 01.06.2019 operating under the name RIKILT) is one of the research institutes of Stichting Wageningen Research (WR). Stichting Wageningen Research is part of Wageningen University and Research (WUR).

WFSR is a world-class institute in agrofood research. WFSR conducts high-quality and independent research through analyses, developing new methods, forensic and scientific research and risk analyses and assessments, mostly for the Dutch government. WFSR has an extensive analytical infrastructure and experience in the development and application of ultra-trace target and non-target analytical methods. It is part of the EU network for reference laboratories for pesticide residues in food and feed. WFSR is also part of EU-NETVAL (European Union Network of Laboratories for the Validation of Alternative Methods).


Role in the project

WR (WFSR) is partner in the project and involved in WP2 (task 2.2 – PPPs distribution and accumulation in ecosystems, plants, animals and humans), WP3 (task 3.4 – validate exposure estimates, using biomonitoring at CSS) & WP4 (Tasks 4.1-4.5 (eco)toxicology assessment). WR will be responsible for PPP residue analysis in human, animal, plant and environmental samples. In addition, WR will perform in-vitro metabolic clearance measurements, PBPK modelling, and in-vitro testing of (mixtures of ) compounds for toxic effects.

Involved personnel

15 Mol Dr. Mol Senior Scientist (analytical chemistry) with >23 years of experience in pesticide residue analysis in food, environment and (human) biomonitoring. Highly experienced in advanced mass spectrometry-based analysis and analytical quality control. 
15 Punt Dr. Punt Scientist (kinetic modelling) with >10 years of experience and more than 50 publications in the field of developing physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models based on non-animal input parameters. Key experience in generating in vitro metabolism data with animal (cows, chicken, pigs, rats) and human cells and tissue fractions for kinetic model development.
15 Peijnenburg Dr. Peijnenburg Senior Scientist (toxicology, molecular biology) with >25 years of experience in the application of omics techniques and in vitro assays for animal-free mechanism-based toxicity testing. Contact person for WFSR in EU-NETVALs).
Silhouet Dr. Jonathan Diaz in an expert in analytical chemistry with experience on pesticides and mycotoxins determination in food and feed employing chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry. 
Silhouet Dr. Beekmann group manager of the Agricultural Research Service (DLO)
Silhouet Dr. Louisse has been working as a toxicologist at WFSR, where he mainly focuses on the development and application of animal-free methods for the risk assessment of substances.
